Nearly every school we visit or speak to has a set of values. You’ll see them on walls, in handbooks, or maybe even in newsletters. And that’s a great start — visual reminders help keep values visible and front of mind for students and staff. But the bigger question is: how are those values being brought to life in everyday school life?
Character education starts with the principle that character can be taught, caught, and sought. Teaching happens in lessons, but students also catch values by observing staff behaviour, and they seek them out when the school environment encourages choices aligned with core principles. Measure and reflect. Ask staff and students how values influence their learning, behaviour, and wellbeing. Track it over time.
