Brief Resilience Scale (BRS)

A six-question scale that measures resilience in its simplest sense: how quickly someone bounces back after stress or difficult times.

Mainly adults

What it measures

The BRS measures the ability to bounce back or recover from stress. Unlike longer resilience measures, it does not ask about the resources that support resilience, such as relationships or coping skills. It focuses on the outcome: whether people recover quickly after setbacks. Three statements describe bouncing back, and three describe struggling to recover.

Who it’s for

It was developed and validated with adults, including students, and is quick enough for staff surveys or as part of a wider wellbeing questionnaire. It is sometimes used with older teenagers, but younger pupils are better served by child-specific measures. It is a self-report snapshot, not a diagnostic tool.

SAMPLE QUESTION

I usually recover quickly after a stressful experience.

Strongly disagree · Disagree · Neutral · Agree · Strongly agree

Paraphrased example for illustration. See the original paper for the exact wording.

How it’s scored

Each statement is rated from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). The three negatively worded statements are reverse scored, then the six scores are averaged to give a result between 1 and 5. A commonly used guide treats 1.00 to 2.99 as low resilience, 3.00 to 4.30 as normal and 4.31 to 5.00 as high, though these bands are guidance rather than clinical thresholds.

Validation and source

Bruce Smith and colleagues developed the BRS and published it in the International Journal of Behavioral Medicine in 2008. They tested it in four samples, including students and people with health conditions, and found good reliability and a single underlying factor. Higher scores were linked to better coping and lower anxiety and depression. It has since been translated and validated in many countries. It is widely used free of charge with citation of the original paper.

WHERE YOUHQ FITS

Validated scales measure. youHQ helps you act on what they show.

The BRS tells you how quickly people feel they bounce back. Resilience shows up in everyday moments too, after a bad lesson, a falling-out or a tough week. youHQ gives pupils a quick daily check-in and builds habits like goal setting and reflection, helping them recover and grow. Use the BRS to measure resilience, and youHQ to help build it every day.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Brief Resilience Scale score?

Scores are averaged from 1 to 5. A common guide treats 3.00 to 4.30 as normal, below 3.00 as low and above 4.30 as high.

Is the BRS suitable for pupils?

It was developed with adults. It is sometimes used with older teenagers, but for younger pupils choose a measure designed for their age.

Is the Brief Resilience Scale free?

It is widely used free of charge for research and education, with credit to Smith and colleagues (2008). Check the original paper before commercial use.
